Monday afternoon the Carlton Platinum 1 girls played Harewood. This game was scheduled to take place about 5 weeks ago but because of school tournament week it was postponed until Monday afternoon. The game was never supposed to be a final but as it the season played out it turned into a winner takes all game. The winner would be crowned champion.
Reddo’s started with a hiss and a roar scoring the first goal within 2 minutes of the opening whistle. After the opening goal the game became a real battle with Reddo’s dominating possession and territory. Although they went close to scoring 2 or 3 further goals in the first half, there was no addition to the score. After half time Harewood came out with the bit between their teeth and dominated the third quarter while our girls sat back a little and defended strongly.
The defining moment in the match occurred in the break at the end of the third quarter and it was an act of coaching genius from our esteemed leader Andrew Hastie. Haste pointed out to the girls that this game was for the championship and that they needed to toughen up and play like champions if they wanted to win the title. The girls obviously listened to Haste because they came out firing in the forth quarter, scoring 3 unanswered goals to win the game 4 nil and claim the championship.
